What is a PhD in Social Work?

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Work is the highest academic qualification in the field of social sciences and welfare studies. Unlike an MSW, which trains you for field practice, a PhD prepares you to conduct original research, critique existing theories, and contribute new knowledge to social work policy and practice.

At MIT University Sikkim, the programme is built around three pillars — mandatory coursework in research methodology, supervised independent research, and a doctoral thesis evaluated by internal and external examiners. The programme is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and fully follows UGC PhD Regulations 2022.

It is the right choice for MSW graduates, social science postgraduates, government welfare officers, NGO professionals, and anyone who wants to move from practice to research and policy leadership.

PhD Social Work Admission Process 2026

The admission process is transparent and follows UGC PhD Regulations 2022. Here is the complete sequence from application to enrolment.

Admission Process Overview

Stage Activity Who When

Stage 2 Application Screening & Admit Card University After last date

Stage 4 Final Merit List & Offer Letter University After interview
Stage 5 Fee Payment & Enrolment Candidate As per joining date

Step-by-Step Process in Detail

  1.     Check Supervisor Availability for Your Research Area Before filling the form, contact the Department of Social Work at MIT University, Sikkim, to confirm which specialisations have supervisor availability for 2026. This prevents wasted effort and ensures your application is aligned with what the department can support.
  2.     Fill the Online Application Form: Go to admission.mituniversitysikkim.com. Fill all personal, academic, and professional details accurately. Upload required documents. Pay the non-refundable application fee via UPI, Net Banking, or Card.
  3.     Submit Your Preliminary Research Proposal: A research proposal of 800 to 1,200 words is mandatory. It must include: proposed research title, background and rationale, research objectives, brief literature context, proposed methodology, and expected contribution. A well-prepared proposal significantly improves your interview outcome.
  4.     Attend the Research Interview Before DRC Panel: Candidates who qualify for the written test appear before the Departmental Research Committee. You present and defend your research proposal. The panel evaluates subject knowledge, proposal originality, communication, and doctoral readiness.
  5.     Receive the Offer Letter and Confirm Your Seat: Selected candidates get a formal offer letter. Confirm acceptance and pay the first-year fee within the deadline. Delay may result in the seat going to the next candidate on the merit list.
  6.     Supervisor Allocation and Topic Finalisation: After enrolment, the department assigns your research supervisor. You meet within the first two weeks to refine and finalise the research topic before the pre-PhD seminar registration.
  7. Begin Coursework (Semester I): The first semester is fully dedicated to mandatory coursework. Minimum 55% is required to proceed to the research phase.

India: India’s social welfare sector is expanding rapidly. MIT University Sikkim graduates carry an added advantage — a deep contextual understanding of Northeast India’s tribal, cross-border, and Himalayan social landscape.

Abroad: The PhD from a UGC-recognised Indian university is accepted by AIU for equivalence and recognised internationally. Post-doctoral opportunities exist in the UK (British Council), USA (Fulbright), Germany (DAAD), and Australia.
