Master of Arts in Music (MA Music) is a 2-year postgraduate academic degree that provides advanced, scholarly, and performance-oriented training in music. It is one of India’s most distinctive and culturally rich postgraduate programmes — combining the rigour of academic musicology with the discipline of performance practice, rooted in India’s extraordinarily deep musical heritage, while engaging with contemporary global music culture.

At the MA level, music is studied not just as performance but as a complete human knowledge system — encompassing Raga theory and its mathematical precision, Tala and rhythmic structures, the historical evolution of Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, the ethnomusicology of tribal and folk music, the psychoacoustics of sound and music, Western harmony and counterpoint, music composition, and the research methods needed to document and analyse musical traditions scientifically.

India’s National Education Policy 2020 specifically recognises Indian music as a core Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and encourages its deep integration into higher education. The Ministry of Culture, Sangeet Natak Akademi, cultural missions of state governments, and the growing global market for authentic Indian classical music have together created an expanding professional and academic ecosystem for trained music graduates.

MIT University Sikkim’s MA Music programme is uniquely positioned within the Northeast Indian and Himalayan cultural context. Sikkim and the broader Northeast region are home to extraordinarily rich and diverse musical traditions — Tibetan Buddhist ritual music, Lepcha folk music, Nepali classical and folk traditions, tribal music of the Sikkimese communities, and the cultural intersection of South Asian, Himalayan, and Southeast Asian music systems. This living musical context enriches academic music study in ways that are genuinely unavailable from any campus in the plains.

Graduates of MA Music from MIT University Sikkim are qualified to pursue careers as university music faculty (after UGC-NET), music school teachers, musicologists, performers, music directors, composers, music therapists, cultural programme officers, ethnomusicologists, and digital music content creators.

Contact the Department of Music at MIT University Sikkim to check which specialisations are open for 2026. For instrumental specialisations, ask whether prior proficiency in the instrument is expected;  even though it does not affect the merit ranking, it affects your ability to keep up with the programme curriculum.
  2. Fill the Online Application Form: Visit admission.mituniversitysikkim.com. Select MA Music from the programme list. Fill all personal and academic details accurately. Indicate your first and second preference specialisation. Upload all required documents in clear PDF or JPG format. Pay the non-refundable application processing fee via UPI, Net Banking, or Card.
  3. Merit List Compilation: After the application deadline, the university compiles the merit list based solely on aggregate percentage in the qualifying Bachelor’s degree. No audition, performance test, or musical ability assessment of any kind is used as a selection criterion. Candidates are ranked purely on academic merit within each category.
  4. Merit List Publication: Published on the official admission portal. Selected candidates are notified via email and SMS. Check your status using your application number.
  5. Receive Offer Letter: Candidates in the merit list receive an official offer letter specifying: specialisation allotted, first-semester fee amount, payment deadline, and joining date.
  6. Pay Fee and Confirm Seat — Pay the first-semester fee within the deadline stated in the offer letter. Non-payment forfeits your seat to the next candidate on the merit list. Keep the payment receipt — required at joining.
  7. Document Verification and Enrolment: Report on campus by the joining date. Submit original documents for verification. Collect your student ID. Complete all enrolment formalities.
  8. Attend Orientation and Begin Semester I: Attend the mandatory orientation. Be introduced to faculty, programme structure, practice schedule, and the Department of Music at MIT University Sikkim. Semester I begins on the academic calendar date.

  6. The Himalayan Cultural Ecosystem — Studying music in Sikkim means living in a cultural space where music is not just an academic subject — it is part of daily community life, religious practice, festivals, and seasonal celebration. Pang Lhabsol, Losar, Saga Dawa, Tihar, and other cultural festivals provide real-world musical immersion throughout the academic year.
  7. Final Public Recital — A Milestone Performance — MA Music at MIT Sikkim culminates in a graded public recital in Semester IV. This performance milestone provides graduates with a formal, evaluated stage experience that is a genuine credential for performance careers, teacher applications, and academic portfolios.
  8. Music Therapy — Growing Healthcare Career Path — The dedicated Music Therapy subject in Semester III, combined with raga-based therapy foundations in the Hindustani vocal or instrumental specialisations, positions MIT Sikkim’s MA Music graduates to enter this growing clinical career path.
  9. Digital Music Technology in Curriculum — Semester IV’s Digital Music Technology subject ensures that MA Music graduates are not locked into purely traditional career paths. DAW skills, music production basics, and recording knowledge open the expanding digital music economy to graduates.
  10. Affordable Campus in a Culturally Rich Setting — The cost of living in Sikkim is significantly lower than in music education hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, or Kolkata. The campus environment — peaceful, naturally beautiful, culturally rich — is itself an appropriate context for the focused, disciplined, and contemplative practice that serious music study demands.

MA Music Scope

Music as a career in India is undergoing a genuine transformation. Beyond traditional performance and teaching paths, new careers have emerged in music therapy, digital content creation, music production, music technology, ethnomusicology, cultural documentation, corporate wellness, and the global streaming music industry. An MA Music from a UGC-recognised university positions graduates at the intersection of academic credibility and practical creative skill.

Career Paths in Detail

  1. University and College Music Faculty

With UGC-NET qualification in Music (Subject Code 71), MA Music graduates become eligible for the post of Assistant Professor at any UGC-recognised college or university in India. This is the most stable, prestigious, and financially structured long-term career path. The UGC 7th Pay Commission scale for Assistant Professors starts at Level 10 (basic pay Rs. 57,700/month) and grows through Associate Professor and Professor levels. With India’s expanding higher education system and growing number of music departments, demand for qualified music faculty is consistent.

  1. School Music Teacher and Director

CBSE and ICSE-affiliated schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, private school chains, and music academies employ MA Music graduates as school music teachers, department heads, and music directors. Schools are increasingly valuing structured music education and hiring postgraduate-qualified faculty over certificate-level instructors. NEP 2020’s emphasis on arts education is expanding school music faculty positions across India.

  1. Music Performer and Recitalist

Advanced performance training through MA Music opens the professional performance path — concerts, festivals, sabhas, All India Radio (AIR) artist registration, Doordarshan empanelment, and state government cultural programme artist panels. The Sangeet Natak Akademi, ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations), and state akademi bodies conduct performances and cultural exchanges where MA Music-qualified artists are given preference. Northeast India’s rich festival calendar — from Pang Lhabsol to Saga Dawa — creates a distinctive local performance ecosystem.

  1. Music Therapist

Music therapy is a growing clinical field in India. Hospitals, rehabilitation centres, mental health facilities, de-addiction centres, palliative care units, and special education schools employ music therapists. Additional certification from the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) affiliated bodies or NADA Centre for Music Therapy in India significantly strengthens this path. Research into raga-based therapeutic applications is increasingly published in peer-reviewed journals.

  1. Ethnomusicologist and Cultural Documentarian

One of the most distinctive career paths for MA Music graduates from MIT University Sikkim — given its unique specialisation in Folk and Tribal Music of Northeast India. Ethnomusicologists document, analyse, archive, and revitalise musical traditions. Employment opportunities exist at the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Namami Brahmaputra cultural missions, Northeast state cultural departments, Anthropological Survey of India, state tribal research institutes, UNESCO cultural heritage programmes, and international music documentation projects.

  1. Music Composer and Director — Film, Television, Digital

The Indian film industry (Bollywood, Tollywood, regional film industries) and the rapidly expanding OTT content ecosystem create continuous demand for trained music composers, background score directors, and music arrangers. The digital music composition specialisation in MA Music equips graduates with both the classical foundation and the digital production skills needed for this market. Many of India’s most respected film music composers began with classical music training.

  1. Music Producer and Audio Engineer

With the Music Composition and Production specialisation and hands-on DAW training, MA Music graduates can enter the professional music production industry — producing independent artists, creating jingles and advertising music, scoring video games, producing podcast intros, and creating content for YouTube channels, Spotify, Apple Music, and the global streaming market.

  1. Cultural Programme Officer and Arts Administrator

State and central government cultural departments, ICCR, Sangeet Natak Akademi, state akademi bodies, cultural tourism organisations, and Embassies employ qualified music professionals for cultural programme management, artist selection, cultural exchange coordination, and arts funding administration. Northeast India’s cultural richness makes these positions especially relevant for MIT Sikkim graduates.

  1. Music Content Creator and Digital Educator

YouTube music education channels, Instagram reels on classical music, music lesson apps, and online music teaching platforms represent a growing career path for MA Music graduates with strong pedagogical skills. Many successful music educators have built significant audiences teaching raga, tala, and Indian classical music fundamentals online — a career path that requires exactly the depth of knowledge an MA Music provides.
